I am hosting another debate site for the Gonzaga Debate Institute this summer, MyGDI.net, that should have some great content on it. Tonight I posted a podcast that featured deb(k)ate author Izak Dunn. Those of you interested in running Ks on the High School Space Topic should probably check it out.

Adam Symonds on “the art of the case hit”

Posted in camp, case hits, High School, lectures, Video with tags , , , on October 12, 2010 by Scott Odekirk

Special thanks to the Gonzaga Debate Institute for allowing us to post this video. Adam Symonds is a professor at Arizona State University, where he is the director of forensics, and he is also a former CEDA Nationals champion and first round debater for Whitman. Adam is also the longest tenured faculty member at the GDI. This lecture is in the context of this year’s high school topic. Adam is also one of my favorite judges.

“Judge Adaptation” a Lecture by James Roland

Posted in camp, lectures, Video with tags , , , , , , , on August 9, 2010 by Scott Odekirk

Everybody should observe James Roland and the relationship he has cultivated with this game. When I shared an apartment with James this summer he always said, “you know Odie, we can change the world!” I learned so much from him just hanging out at night and sharing meals. His view are nuanced and his methods are inspirational. Everybody should watch James Roland speak. We recently reported his trip to the oval office and we are proud to bring you this lecture from the GDI that James gave on judge adaptation.

A Demonstration Debate on the 2010-11 High School Policy Topic

Posted in camp, College, topic, Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 5, 2010 by Scott Odekirk

Featuring Will Sears (2010 NDT Semifinalist from Wake) and Beth Mendenhall (outstanding senior from Kansas State) on the affirmative, against Eric Lanning (2010 NDT Champion) and Leah Moczulski (amazing 2N from Gonzaga) on the negative. Brian Rubaie (2010 NDT first round recipient and dominant 2A from UTD) moderates this debate. Sam Mauer (Director at Emporia State), Scott Odekirk (Coach at Idaho State), and the student vote make up the three ballots that will decide this debate on a 3-0 for the affirmative, but you can make your own choice.

The Non-Trad Showdown

Posted in Battles, camp, College, Ks on the Aff, lectures, Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 27, 2010 by Scott Odekirk

Featuring ISU OD (Odekirk and Dunn), two debate coaches who learned their style at Idaho State, on the affirmative. Also featuring Fullerton NW (Nielson and Ward), two current debate coaches who developed their style while debating together at Cal State Fullerton. What happens when two non traditional K teams face eachother? This is the question asked by this showdown which has become a regular aspect of the Gonzaga Debate Institute curriculum. This showdown was moderated (quite well) by Professor Sam Mauer who is the Director at Emporia State University. Enjoy! Thanks to all the participants (many of which are authors on this site) and a special thanks to the GDI for making it all possible.
